2009 League of American Bicyclists' Rankings
The LAB has released the second annual ranking of Bicycle Friendly States, and Delaware has improved from #31 to #9! LAB's Bicycle Friendly State Program is a program that ranks states that support bicycling. States are primarily ranked based on their level of bike-friendliness. Furthermore, states can receive feedback, assistance, and training to improve their bicycling legislation, projects, and programs.
The LAB has recommendations for Delaware on how to improve our ranking even further:
Legislation
No 3 feet or greater safe passing law
Right turn only lane not included in far to right exclusions
No restriction on the use of cell phones while operating a vehicle
Policies & Programs
No CO2 reduction plan that includes promoting bicycling
No policy requiring bike racks at state owned buildings, or funding mechanism to pay for installation
Infrastructure
No safety funding spent on bicycling in last 3 years
Education
No League of American Bicyclists Smart Cycling classes taught in last 12 months
No questions on bicyclists rights and responsibilities on driver's test
No questions on motorists responsibilities towards cyclists on CDL test
Enforcement
No education of officer on cyclist rights & responsibilities through academy or continuing education
